Organisational Knowledge Clause 7.1.6
This is a new and interesting clause in ISO9001, it balances the lack of prescriptive requirements in the standard, although not very convincingly at this stage. I am sure this section will be developed in future revisions.
For the present it requires businesses to think about and determine the knowledge necessary for the operation of its processes to make sure it achieves conformity of its products and services. This is generally gained by experience.
This knowledge needs to be maintained and be made available to the extent necessary.
When things change the business needs to think about its current knowledge and how to obtain any additional knowledge required.
This clause is intended to safeguard organisations from loss of knowledge.
e.g. staff turnover, retirement and failure to capture and share information.
and to encourage the acquisition of knowledge.
E.g. Learning from experience, mentoring and benchmarking.
